All HVAC systems need regular maintenance. This often consists of end-of-season/ beginning-of-season inspections, replacing air filters, and cleaning the vents. However, the reality is homeowners often get busy and forget to take care of these tasks. It isn’t until there’s a problem that they realize their HVAC needs maintenance. Here are five signs you should be on the lookout for as clues that yours may need a little TLC.
Weak airflow
The volume of air coming out of your vents is a strong sign that your HVAC needs maintenance. This can be from a simple problem, such as an overly dirty air vent. It can also indicate there’s a problem with your blower motor or that there’s a blockage within your main trunk line.
Odd sounds
Have you ever heard a high-pitched “whirring” sound coming from your furnace while it’s in operation? Or do the vibrations from your HVAC system suddenly feel or sound stronger? Perhaps you heard a crash or a loud pop from your outside air unit?
All of these are just possibilities, and the cause of each is different (and often requires the assistance of a full-service HVAC contractor). The point we’re making is that any odd sounds that you hear from your furnace or air conditioning unit are a strong sign that your HVAC needs maintenance. Be sure to schedule an appointment ASAP if you hear any odd sounds like these.
Increased usage
Increased system usage can be a simple reflection of Mother Nature’s latest assault on our region. Cold snaps lead to more heating hours while heat waves will usually lead to additional cooling times.
However, if the weather has been relatively consistent, or your year-over-year usage/bill sees a sudden spike, it might mean that your system needs to be inspected. Again, this can be a simple solution such as the aforementioned clogged air filter. But it can also point to inefficiencies that need to be addressed ASAP.
Unexpected smells
You really shouldn’t ever smell anything coming from your HVAC system, especially while it’s in use. Smells or unpleasant odors may point to a buildup of mold or mildew, both of which point to increased moisture within your system. This is not only unpleasant, but it can also lead to health problems for your family.
Age
Another “sign” that your HVAC needs maintenance is if the system is old. Just as your car or truck needs increased maintenance as it ages, an older HVAC system may have more problems than a newer one. As it ages, you’ll want to be more proactive with staying on top of your annual maintenance inspections.
Let us know if your HVAC needs maintenance
There are, of course, other signs that your HVAC needs maintenance. Those are often more obvious, such as a system that won’t turn on or if your AC only blows warm air.
